Food Network Challenge Winner
Oct 23, 2011
Well the third time is the Charm… WE WON!!!!!
Food Network Challenge: Halloween Ghost Story Cakes just aired tonight, and we are so excited to announce that we took home $10,000 with our “Dreaded Dreams Come True” show piece.
This cake design is based off of a dream I had as a young girl. I was chased by a glowing red skeleton and the only way I could make him go away was to scream really loud. He certainly wasn’t dressed in a coat and tie, but due to a special request from our guest trick-or-treaters, we added a tie to make him look a little less scary. Our little girl asked for the skeleton to have blonde hair as well, hence the book cover with a girly skeleton.
This episode of Challenge had two different twists… the mystery guest trick-or-treaters and some costumed judges requesting we incorporate them into our piece somehow. We were paired with Keegan… AKA Frankenstein. Avalon knocked out an awesome head to represent Frankenstein that posed as a stuffed animal for our sweet little girl.
We created a comfy chair in which our little girl sat. I especially loved the molding around the base and the creases in the front of the chair to create the appearance of someone sitting in it.
The little girl was modeled after myself, and we had to add an adorable rump of a scared kitty diving under the blanket just for Kerry (She has a love for cats).
This cake would not have been complete with out the scary skeleton. While we were not required to use extreme elements, it wouldn’t have been as scary without the addition of a rotating head, spooky smoke, and a red glow.
Avalon and I worked really hard on this piece and put in lots of hours practicing before we hit the set, and I certainly think it showed in our piece. We were ready for anything the judges threw at us and had so much fun in the process. It was especially nice to have a little fun after the show…
Thanks so much to the following people for helping us create this winning piece:
Jeremy for building our stand. He totally knocked it out of the park adding remote controlled movement to the skeleton’s head.
Adele and her fantastic family of sound effects (Lance-ghost, Payton-little girl talking, and Brayden-little girl screaming).
Rachael with Girls and Curls for waking up far too early to do my hair and make up. You did a great job yet again!
And of course… thank you Avalon for being a great assistant. You are a very talented artist. I appreciate all the hard work you put into each element of this cake.
If you missed the premier, it will re-air October 29 at 1pm mountain time.

Rachael & the entire Intricate Icings Team –
So stinking proud of you all. You endured through two previous challenges and you didn’t let that stop you from taking home the gold. 3rd time is the charm and you should be VERY proud of the hard work (understatement) that went into this beautiful cake.
Don’t forget us little people when you start to go national!
Best,
Heather Gardner
